It has now been over a year since Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. He is controversial, divisive, arrogant, unpredictable, and a catalyst for widespread protests. His approval ratings have been fluttering around 40%, and the list of people/groups he has offended throughout the years is too long for this article. Simply put, he causes a lot of people to reach for the booze.
Luckily for us, the beer community is diverse, passionate, and proud. Many within the industry have been affected by Trump’s words and policies, but these same people are excessively creative and not afraid to let their voices be heard. This has resulted in many “Trump” brews.
5 Rabbit Cerveceria is a small Latin-owned brewery located just outside of Chicago. They were given the opportunity to develop a Trump Golden Ale to be served exclusively at Trump Tower in Chicago. Soon after, the founder of 5 Rabbit, Andrés Araya, was faced with a difficult decision between profits and pride and respect for his heritage.
In June of 2015, presidential candidate Donald Trump was quoted saying that Mexican immigrants, “are not our friends, believe me…They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
5 Rabbit made the decision to stop doing business with Trump Tower the day after Donald said this. They were now stuck with a lot of Trump Golden Ale, but instead of trashing it, they decided to repurpose and rebrand. The result was Chinga Tu Pelo, which translates to, “Fuck Your Hair.”
According to their website, a portion of the proceeds will go to “support a charity that aligns with [their] vision for solidarity, inclusiveness, and a rejection of the rhetoric of prejudice and hate.”
Also prior to the election, Dock Street Beer in Philadelphia released a “Short Fingered Stout” with the name Friends Don’t Let Friends Vote Drumpf. On the Dock Street website, they describe the brew as, “a bitter and delusional stout with an airy, light-colored head atop a so-so body.”
On his show, Last Week Tonight, John Oliver discovered that Trump’s ancestral name was originally Drumpf. The segment quickly became one of the show’s most successful (now with over 33 million views on YouTube). Oliver pointed out that Drumpf takes much of the grandiose intrigue out of the last name, and Dock Street obviously decided to run with it. (view episode here)
Northern Maverick Brewing Company took things a step further and committed to donating 5% of the sales from their Fake News Ale to a charity or group that, “helps reverse a questionable policy.” Northern Maverick is located north of the border in Toronto, but they didn’t pull any punches when they said this beer pairs well “with small hands, striking comb overs, HUUUGE egos, and all things Mexican.”
Speaking of Mexican, this next Trump brew comes from Mexico City – along with its controversial imagery. Amigous Cerveza is a collaborative effort between Casa Cerveza Cru Cru, Error de Diciembre, and Epic Brewing. They purposely misspell “amigos,” as well as feature Trump wearing a mariachi outfit with a swastika belt buckle. They would rather see the President, “in a mad house, not the White House.”
Trump themed beers have even made an appearance in Eastern Europe. Pravda Beer Theatre in Ukraine created an Imperial Mexican Lager in, “celebration of such an infamous presidency.” The label is crowded with Melania, Trump Tower, Putin, the Mexican Border wall, a Free Melania sign, and even Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone 2. Who can ever forget such a monumental cameo from Donald?!
Pravda’s website claims that, “this beer will make you build a wall around your own heart,” and calls for, “cheers in scorning to an unpredictable future.”
Dumb Donald is a double IPA with Key Lime brewed by Spiteful Brewing in Chicago. Their label is particularly harsh, and describes Dumb Donald as, “paused half way through evolution,” as well as having, “the vocab of a 2nd grader.” According to Men’s Journal, the owner of Spiteful Brewing was hoping to start a “social commentary on ignorance.”
Wherever you fall on the political spectrum, I think most of us can agree that President Trump is a polarizing figure. We are all lucky enough to be free to voice our opinions, and what better way to do that than with beer?
In the words of 5 Rabbit Cerveceria…
