Is There A Difference Between Porter and Stout?

Craft Beer Drinker, Padres, USC Trojans, Navy Midshipmen, & SDSU Aztecs Fan. I enjoy watching movies & sports, mostly at home. I typically do that with a beer in my hand.

Is There A Difference Between Porter and Stout?  Yes, they are fraternal twins. Stouts and porters are brewed from the same recipe of a mix of brown and pale malt. By pulling off less wort the English were able to make a beer called Brown Stout. Pulling more wort off the next batch they made a beer called Porter. Both beers were dark ales, born of the same mother but different. Brown Stout had an alias, “Strong Porter”. Was this the genesis of the question?…

By Summit Brewing Brewery Announces Sixth Union Series Beer Six months ago, Summit Brewing Co.’s Head Brewer Damian McConn used his Outlook Calendar tool to reserve the brew house for a day and kicked out all the other brewers. Armed with an authentic British recipe from the 1840s, he set about brewing the kind of classic Imperial Stout he liked to drink 20 years ago in the UK. Aging since June 2017 at 50 degrees in a 300-barrel stainless steel fermentation tank, it’s possible that…

Some of my friends in my beer circles claim I loved this beer before I even tried it. They allege my love affair with the “normal” Expedition stout and hoarding of it (113 beers aging in the cellar from 2013) is proof of my inherent bias. I’m not fit, they say, to critically judge this masterpiece and should recuse myself from judging this fine elixir. Not true not true.  I love this beer.  This beer is another data point to prove that a good beer,…

Stout Brewer’s Reserve by Central Waters Brewing Company – Beer Review

Craft beer connoisseur that supports the Michigan craft beer industry, which produces some of the greatest beers in the world.
@Michuntapped

Stats Style: Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout Package: 12 oz Bottle ABV: 9.5% I’m a sucker for a good bourbon barrel stout, but let’s be real who isn’t. Being in Michigan has spoiled me with breweries like Founders, Dark Horse and Bells brewing up some of the best BBA stouts in the world. I’m a self-proclaimed craft beer connoisseur so sometimes I need to see what other states have to offer. One of my more recent bottle acquisitions was the Brewer’s Reserve Stout by Central Waters…

Holiday Beer Review: STONE XOCOVEZA (Mocha Stout with Holiday Spices, 8.1% ABV) An interesting Mexican-hot-chocolate-inspired beer from Stone Brewing you should try. Stone Brewing is well known to the craft beer world. They are the ninth largest craft brewery in the country, and in 2008 they were voted the “Top All Time Brewery on Planet Earth” by readers of Beer Advocate. Stone’s (extremely) hoppy IPAs are their most famous offerings, and they own the Arrogant Bastard brand. They also make some good stouts, including barrel…

The Sommbeer staff loves a good stout.  If you look back through the posts that have been published on this site I can’t imagine a style of beer that we collectively give more love to.  Whenever I visit a brewery the first thing I look for on the tap list, even if it’s a 90 degree day in the middle of summer, is a good stout.   So it should come as no surprise that upon discovering Witch’s Hat Brewing in South Lyon Mi. many years…

There are times in your life where the disappointment is palpable and stays with you. Like when you asked a girl to dance and she said “no”, or you got to the cafeteria late on stromboli day and had to eat a day old cheeseburger. Maybe not life changing disappointment but something I categorize as “slumped shoulder events”. The events that you walk away from the same way Charlie Brown did all the time. There are also times when something pleasantly surprises you. Dark Lord…

I buy and drink a lot of beer.  Like most beer fans I enjoy tasting new and different things to keep interested in the brew that’s in my glass.  Recently I went to the local bottle shop and mixed myself up a six-pack of random beers that I hadn’t had before and one of these beers was Tres Blueberry Stout by Dark Horse Brewing. Full disclosure here, I am not much of a fan of beer with fruit in it, especially berries.  Truthfully, beer or…

We the people of Sommbeer sure love our stouts.  Bell’s Expedition Stout, Dragon’s Milk, KBS, and Neapolitan Milk Stout are just a small sampling of the stouts that we love.  Hanging in there with them is Founders Imperial Stout; A big burly heavy beer that hits shelves at the beginning of each year to put the holidays to bed and warm your belly in the cold winter months with some Imperialistic goodness. Founders Imperial Stout is a big beer. Really Big.  To further use the words of…

How To Introduce Your Friends to Craft Beer 22oz bottles. Cases. Cans. Kegs. Growlers. Beer comes in lots of packages.  But it’s the 6-pack that’s ubiquitous. It’s also a great way to organize beers. A 6-pack of my favorites. A 6-pack of beers to try when you visit Philly.  A 6-pack of beers that I was excited to buy before they were bought by ABInbev.  But my favorite is a 6-pack of beers to introduce a new drinker to craft? The craft beer world is…
