Jdub’s Brewing Company, Sarasota Florida
Brewery Review by John Uhlig
QUALITY. INNOVATION. CULTURE.
That is the slogan that greets you for this Sarasota based Brewery.
If you live in the Tampa Area, or are just visiting and like craft Beer, this is another brewery you should put on your list. When searching for craft beer I often look to local craft as I like to support the community. One of the Breweries that is most prevalent on grocery store shelves, where I live, is JDub’s. In every Grocery Store I shop in I’m greeted by their beers. Their distribution is excellent here in the Tampa Bay Area.
My interest in them peaked when I started making craft beer ice cream, and their chocolate porter – Bell Cow, was one of the first I experimented with. It’s a seriously delicious chocolate milk porter and has become a staple for me. So, it was only natural that I drive the hour south of the Bay to give their brewery a visit, and of course let them try the ice cream I made with their Beer.
The brewery itself is small and laid back. It is on a back street in Sarasota not far from where the Orioles play Spring Training games at Ed Smith Stadium. I visited on a lazy Tuesday afternoon while a few employees were working at the tables in the taproom on their Macs. One person was at the bar and a few were sitting soaking up the sun in the back outside in their beer garden. The Taproom had a laid back feel and would be what my father would have referred to as a “beer joint”.
I was immediately greeted by the server, Carly, who was friendly and helpful. It turns out she was also quite knowledgeable about beer and local beer in particular. That was a plus and not always the case. We discussed the beers at the brewery and she spoke about her favorites as well as some other popular local breweries.
I decided on the Orange IPA (6.4%), good choice. Nice IPA flavor with a strong hint of orange. Tasty and refreshing. Enough so that I had a second helping. I also had a sample of the Damb Good Wee Heavy which is a Scotch Ale (9.7%) which was flavorful with hints of Fruit and caramel. A delicious Scotch Ale which I will have to come back and try it in a full pint.
The “Flagship Beers” I mentioned earlier that greet you in local grocery stores are all very solid, explaining their prevalence of shelf space locally. These beers offer something for everyone. In addition to the Bell Cow Porter there is Poolside, a refreshing Kolsch which is great for the hot Florida sun (not to mention a Gold Medal Winner in the category in 2016 at the U.S. Beer Open) Up Top, a nice hoppy IPA that weighs in at 6.5% and Passion Wheat, a surprisingly flavorful Passion Fruit and Mango Wheat Ale… again a great beer to enjoy in the hot Florida Sun. These Beers are all brewed at “The Brew Hub” in Lakeland as they outgrew the Sarasota facility.

I wished I had more time to spend here , but the 80 miles I traveled to visit limited my time. Thanks much to Taylor Pogue, JDubs “Social Media Guru”, he was friendly and very helpful during my visit.
I will be back… next time for a longer visit, but if you are in the Bay Area it is worth your time to make the trip to this small Brewery with some Big Beers.
