It’s our National Long weekend here in Canada. We call it Canada Day or Dominion Day, and it’s normally celebrated enjoying some cold beverages with friends and family. It’s also a time of year on social media where we read all kinds of posts saying “Happy Canada Day, what beer will you be enjoying?”
Wow, what a question. I mean, for those of you who know me I’m a huge advocate for Ontario Craft Beer. But how do I choose which one is best for such an important day? Do I chose a beer that I think is the best to represent our country? If so, that’s a huge endorsement to say this beer is Canada’s best beer! Am I even qualified with all the beer I’ve tried to make such a distinction? And I’m sure the “macro” people will get their knickers in a knot over that statement as well.
Do I go with the whole marketing schemes that some of the breweries have released? You know, the ones that advertise the Canadian Flag for a limited time? The ones that portray the fact that we recently celebrated our 150th birthday this weekend? The ones that have a depiction of our proud beaver waving a hockey stick at a moose wearing a tuque? You laugh, but you know I’m right and they are out there.
No, for me nothing says Canada like supporting our local brewery. It’s our small independently owned breweries that really tell the tale of what Canada and our people are all about. If you know your local brewers, you know the challenges they faced just to open their doors. You know the time and dedication they put into each and every beer they make. They are your local artisans, crafting a beer that is unique to them and your area.
So I’ll be raising a glass of Cornwall Ontario’s very own Rurban Brewing tomorrow. More specifically, the new Fairview Saison they’ve recently released. Described by AJ (owner/brewer) as: “…subtle nutmeg spice, fruit salad in aroma and flavor with a dry finish”. Or as I like to say, yummy! Here’s to wishing everyone a safe and Happy Canada Day. And to my American friends who will be celebrating Independence Day next week, cheers!
