Magic Hat’s Wilhelm Scream Review

The Confession:

I am a complete White Girl when it comes to pumpkin spice; candles, lattes, coffee beans, and (of course) beer!  I need it all! My issue with pumpkin beers is that they are usually wheat beers, which I’m not the biggest fan of. So when I saw Magic Hat’s pumpkin ale at the grocery store, I grabbed it like a little kid going for their first pieces of Halloween candy!

The Beer:

Upon my first sip of this beer I thought it tasted kind of watery, but it still seemed pretty good. The more I drank of the bottle, the more I tasted the complexities of the beer. All the spices and flavors (nutmeg, pumpkin, hops, cinnamon, and caramel malts) mentioned on the website are there. No one flavor overwhelms another though, they all mix very well together. I did not really taste too much of a bitterness at the end as the website suggested I would. It is a very solid beer. I could probably get my brother, who Hates pumpkin beer, to drink an entire bottle. And I could see my dad (a solid pale ale and stout man) proclaim that it’s “not bad,” which coming from him is a huge complement to a pumpkin beer. It’s not a sweet tasting beer, but it’s not a dry beer either, it is extremely well balanced. This would be a great beer to sip in front of a nice, cozy fire (which I may do if it’s not all gone by Thursday). It’s a beer that guys can be comfortable drinking, but at the same time I can enjoy it in a fabulous White-Girl-in-Fall fashion!

Grew up in SW Missouri, just moved to Traverse City to help my cousin take care of her daughter. Because of my dad, I grew up going to microbreweries all over the US because he is a fan of good beer. I am a huge fan of punk music and the Red Wings.

  1. Hey Katie,

Nice review! I also picked up this beer over the weekend. I had similar thoughts – definitely thinner than other pumpkin brews. Harpoon’s UFO I felt I needed to chew! This one tasted like a watered-down Weyerbacher…which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
