Beer Porn

Featured Contributor Matt  @SportsNCraftBeer

Beer Porn.  You’ve heard the term. Maybe you’ve even used it. It’s all about the tantalizing picture of beer poured perfectly into its vessel waiting to be consumed…and enjoyed.

I’d argue – most of the time – that it has nothing to do with the narcissistic nature that accompanies most social media posts. Instead, it’s akin to a kid showing off his new toys..”Look what I got!.” More than that, it’s an appreciation of craft, of good beer, and an overall virtual way of raising one’s glass to the world and saying, “Cheers!”

Don’t be confused.  Beer porn is not the pictures you generally see on Untappd. Instead, if you go through Instagram, Pinterest, or — at times — Facebook or Twitter, you will see an array of awesome photos that transform beer into a supermodel.

Those who take it to the next level and turn the beer photos into art form are essentially honoring the craft movement, itself. For that’s what it really is, isn’t? Photography is a science, as is brewing. But, great photos and great beer are an art form. When you merge the two, it’s .. well .. beer porn.

Only a true beer connoisseur understands the true Pavlovian response gained by looking at a great picture of beer.  But, there are many varieties  of beer porn.

Here are a few samples:

There’s the awesomeness of the beer flight, such as this spectacular, alluring photo from @brewtographyproject on Instagram.

There’s the beer selfie (or variations thereof)  such as truly unique method of photos taken by @Daneleheartshops on Instagram. All her photos (taken by her husband, I believe), are similar to this picture.

There’s the brew with a view type of pic. This transports any beer geek into a mindset of drinking beer outside, enjoying nature, and forgetting all of life’s troubles.

There’s the fun type of beer  porn…with a mascot.  Who says beer porn has to be “so serious”?

And finally, the creme de la creme. Some photos are elegant, sophisticated, and downright seductive. Very few do it better than @sode_kate (Twitter/Instagram). Photos like these are as warm as sitting by a fireplace in a mountain cabin, and as enticing as the smell of fresh, warm bread in a family bakery. Here’s one fine example:

There are other types, too, such as beer-haul pics, great brewery experiences,  and many more.  If you aren’t privy to the world of beerporn, log onto Instagram or Twitter and look for #beerporn, or #brewwithaview or #beerphotos, or of course #sommbeer or things of that nature.

It may seem silly to some, but it’s really a testament to the true passion that exists within the craft-beer community.

There is one rule, though.  If it isn’t a good beer, if it doesn’t inspire a little drool, it isn’t beer porn.

We would love to have you on our mailing list. It’s a great way to stay on top of things at Sommbeer.
