The 1 Best Beer from Each State – Sommbeer Readers Choose

Actually 2 beers from each state.
The Sommbeer readers list of the best beer from their state. It’s almost impossible, we admit, to pick just 1 beer.  It’s what makes this mind game so much fun.

This list is a living document and will be updated from your comments and feedback. A lot of states still need entries!

  1. Your State’s Best “Daily Drinker” – It’s your “Go To Beer” sold at grocery stores.
  2. Your State’s “Trophy Beer” – Words like amazing, complex and hard to find may describe this beer.

    DD: Truth (American IPA) Rhinegeist
Trophy: Bodhi (Imperial IPA) Columbus Brewing
or Haze Jude (NEIPA) platform Beer Company

  2. Louisiana:
    NOLA Piety

  3. Michigan:

    Daily Drinker: All Day IPA

Trophy: Juicy Bits by WeldWerks Brewing Company

Trophy: Sweet Baby Jesus by DuClaw Brewing Company

  5. Agree on Two Hearted Ale for Michigan Daily Drinker. However, I vote for Kuhnhenn 4th Dementia Olde Ale as the Trophy Beer selection. Honorable mention to Founders Backwoods Bastard.

  6. New Jersey:
Kane Brewing – A Night To End All Dawns (ANTEAD) barrel aged imperial stout w/ variants (once per year release via lottery or fast online purchase after years of long lines)
    Carton Brewing – 077XX DIPA

    1. Whoa, is the 077XX your daily drinker? If a beer rated that highly is readily available, I’m moving to NJ

      1. It’s actually not a good choice for a daily drinker. Nothing against the beer, it’s great; it’s just not readily available through liquor stores. Something from Flying Fish or River Horse might be more appropriate in that category because of their distribution.

  7. While I personally love Raspberry Tart from New Glarus, I know for a fact that by far the most popular craft beer in the state is Spotted Cow (also from NG). I don’t think it is nearly as good, but for a ‘daily drinker’, many people would choose it. It’s also much more available, and in more forms.

    1. Joel – This is one where I involuntarily did a head slap. You’re right and in fact I’ve had more than a few Spotted Cows to know it’s a good candidate for this category.

Daily: Flyway Bluewing (Blueberry Wheat) – seriously, it’s a blueberry wheat ale that is also a flagship, on tap all over state, incredible color and subtle flavors. No one else has anything like it, and it’s poised to be the next Blue Moon in terms of broad appeal and as a great intro for new craft drinkers

Trophy: Ozark BDCS (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Double Cream Stout) – this is a limited annual release that has turned into a ticketed event for its rabid fanbase

  9. Washington

Daily drinker: bale breaker brewing top cutter ipa

The award goes to: iron horse brewing co.s Irish death

  10. For MN

    Daily: Indeed Shenanigans
Trophy: Bent Paddle Botanical Blonde or Town Hall 3 Hour Tour
