Style: American Brown Ale
Package: 12 oz bottle
Everyone remembers that old saying, “How now brown cow” used to teach children those rounded vowel sounds. Well, Odd Side Ales How Now Brown Cow taught me what a classic American Brown Ale should be. My wife and I have been on brown ale kick lately. We picked up several browns from varying Michigan breweries trying to narrow it down to one or two browns that we can keep on hand to satisfy that craving when it comes calling.
I’ll be honest, it was the label that drew us to this beer. Odd Side Ales has always had interesting names and labeling. Some of my favorites are the Hipster Brunch Stout and Hop Gobbler. Our bottle of How Now Brown Cow was chilled for about two day before being opened. It poured a deep brown with a dark tan head that faded into a thin lacy ring. The aroma starts with a pronounced sweet malt, but is followed up by a roasted nuttiness one would except from a brown ale. The taste is typical of a classic brown; nutty, doughy and plenty sweet roasted malt flavors. This was one of the more robust flavored browns that we purchased. It was crisp, slightly creamy with a mild amount of carbonation which contributed to the overall experience. It’s not something that I would want to sit down and drink a whole six pack of, but it will be nice to throw it into the rotation. I want to get out to Odd Side Ales and try this beer straight from the tap. I think the flavors might open up a little bit, which would take this beer to a whole new level. I would highly recommend checking it out and exploring Odd Side Ales other great offerings.
Feel free to let me what you think. Until next time, Cheers!
